Homophobia- Is Football in the Dark Ages? PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 21 December 2009 01:23

According to The Independent on Sunday, Britain's foremost PR advisor, Max Clifford claims that football  "remains in the dark ages, steeped in homophobia...It's a very sad state of affairs. But it's a fact that homophobia in football is as strong now as it was 10 years ago".

Clifford’s comments echo those of  Trade Union Congress General Secretary Brendan Barber who has suggested that whilst public attitudes in general towards gay people have improved “football grounds remain bastions of homophobic prejudice”. John Reid, Chairman of the QPR LSA has also spoken out against homophobia in his pamphlet ‘Reclaim the Game’.

Not everyone agrees. Andy Townsend in his Talk Sport Radio Show dismissed allegations of homophobia in football commenting that ‘it is just a general part of Mickey Taking’.

We would welcome your views on this subject. Do you think that Max Clifford is right and that football is steeped in homophobia or do you think the problem is being exaggerated? Would you welcome Club taking action to challenge homophobia and if so what do you think they can do? Or would you consider such actions as pointless or as ‘political correctness gone mad’? QPR 1st regrets that once again the club has changed management just when things were looking promising for the team and the fans. We are pleased that the club made a swift  appointment in Paul Hart and Mick Harford and hope that the good work of the season so far is not allowed to slip. The appointment of Harford ,who has been Rangers' assistant manager in the past, does suggest the club is giving some acknowledgement to the  importance of continuity in developing a team. However, we do note that the appointment of both men is only until the end of the season. This suggests that there is likely to be yet another change in the near future. The club, team, and fans need a period of stability so that the club can continue to build and thrive. It will be difficult to attract or keep talent at the club if there is a change of team management every few months.

We would also like to express our thanks to Messers Magilton and Gorman for their work and the wonderful football that the team played in recent weeks.

Congratulations to the Football Supporters Federation and Stoke FC PDF Print E-mail

... For being nominated for the JUSTICE/Liberty Human Rights Award of 2009. This is for “support of football supporters returned to Stoke from Manchester without reason which led to an out-of-court settlement and an apology from the Greater Manchester Police (GMP) for mistreatment.”

Although the award eventually went to the Gurkha Justice Campaign, the FSF can be proud that their achievement has been recognised. Congratulations are also in order to Stoke City who backed their supporters when many other clubs would have chosen to turn the other cheek by underwriting fans’ legal costs to the tune of £20,000.

Around 80 other Stoke fans having a drink in a pub en route to Old Trafford were told by the GMP that they would have to go back to Stoke. Fans were then herded on to coaches, deprived of toilet facilities, told to urinate into cups and forced back to Stoke in horrible conditions. GMP claimed this was perfectly acceptable as Section 27 from the Violent Crime Reduction Act of 2006 entitled them to do so.

In the following weeks the FSF  heard from more and more fans, including a group from Plymouth Argyle who’d received some equally shocking treatment at the hands of South Yorkshire Police, all telling us they’d been served with Section 27 orders.

The evidence the FSF heard concerned them so much that they got in touch with civil rights group Liberty, whose solicitors took up the case, and launched the Watching Football Is Not A Crime! campaign.

After a long legal battle, seven months after the initial event, GMP admitted their use of Section 27 had been unlawful, apologised and paid out compensation to many of the Stoke fans present.

According to the FSF, "The success of this case shows that supporters do not have to unquestioningly accept this type of treatment – when fans stand together we can make a difference".

Does our League need a Salary Cap? PDF Print E-mail
Saturday, 12 December 2009 18:11

Yes it does, according to Lord Mawhinney. In an article in the Guardian, the outgoing Football League chairman stated his belief that the Championship will have to adopt some kind of reduced wage structure to safeguard its existence.

"I personally would've liked some form of salary cap because clubs are spending money they don't have. They keep on doing this and that means they become more and more dependent on a wealthy individual or a wealthy corporation... I don't think that is sustainable. I've worked extremely hard for 18 months to get a salary- capping arrangement and we haven't succeeded because  some of the Championship clubs wouldn't buy into it".

QPR1st regrets that Lord Mawhinney's scheme failed and hope that our own Club was not one of those too short sighted to support it.
